The Challenge
Create a catalogue representing the experiences, as well as showcasing the work of the BA Graphic Communication 2020/2021 graduating class.
The Solution:
Our response was to create an editorial publication that carefully considered and reflected the themes of the degree show as well as representing the work of the graduating class. As part of a team, we curated a selection of responses gathered from each graduating student. These were interspersed between each section, and represented the underlying themes that were being explored in the degree show. Students were asked to contribute photographs from their time indoors and (sometimes) outdoors during lockdown, getting a better understanding of the collective struggles and the strengths we discovered as we manoeuvred the pandemic.
We asked our tutors to chime in as well, asking them to give us their take on the how this pandemic has affected them and their teaching, as well as what growth and rebirth means to them. This created an intimate picture of the course, combatting the isolation we felt over the past year and highlighting everyone’s individual strengths as well as the insight gained over the past year.
Working in a team, I was in charge of organising the content of the catalogue, writing and editing the text (with consultation from the catalogue team), and layout & editorial design.

Ctrl+R
Our degree show’s theme centres around rebirth and growth. It seeks to represent the perseverance of this graduating class. Despite the difficulties, we’ve managed to define ourselves by our collective and individual strengths, not by the pandemic.
Ctrl+R referes to the refresh shortcut on your keyboard. It is a representation of the collective re-evaluation of our thinking, methods, and values while working under the difficulties of the pandemic. In essence, it is a stage of refresh, of re-evaluating our priorities, and restarting our lives as we enter a new stage in our professional and personal lives.
It’s a collection of both analogue and digital outcomes, showcasing the varied interests and methods of this graduating class through printed books, physical products, posters, and digital animation.
